The spring semester was just started on Jan. 30 1999. Instead of having a regular class on Feb. 6, we are celebrating Chinese New Year on the day. We will have a celebrating program from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the school location. The program is free for everyone. A dinner party is arranged after the program. It is $8 per person for the dinner. (The seats are limited first comes first serves.)
The fall semester will start to register the first two weeks of May. (5/1 and 5/8)
History
Union Chinese School was formed in 1979. It started about 6 families and 10 students. It grew to about 300 families and 430 students in 1996. Many families were from Edison Township. Three new Chinese Schools were formed in Edison area in 1997, so that some of families and students were moved to Chinese Schools in Edison at that time. Now, Union Chinese School has about 160 families and 250 students.
Location
Currently, it resides in Thomas Alva Edison Intermediate High School at 800 Rahway Ave. Westfield, NJ 07090. We have rented the location since 1988.
Other than language classes, we also have different art
programs, such as kung fu, folk dance, Chineses yoyo, Chinese kid games,
etc... . We also have many activities that promote community harmony, Pictures
from our New Year cultural festival show our participation of teenagers
and parents.

Classes
We offer 16 language classses and 14 culture classes on Saturday morning. There is 2 hours language class and 1 hour culture class each week from 9 am to noon.
Language Classes are from pre-k (4 years old) to 11 grade, 1 conversation class for all ages, and 2 Chinese as Second Language (CSL) classes for none Chinese speaking families.
Culture classes are Chinese music instrument, folk dance, knoting, yo-yo, kungfu, painting, calligraphy, singing, arts and crafts, drawing, basketball, etc.
